Gillingham boss Mark Stimson believes his decision to hand Barry Fuller the captaincy has helped turn the club’s form around.

Stimson hailed his skipper’s input as instrumental to the side’s recent thrashing of Morecambe and their gallant display at Bradford on Saturday.

The Gills turned around a two-goal half-time deficit to draw with Bradford – despite having Mark Bentley sent off.

“It was a big decision to put Barry Fuller captain but you sense it is different now,” said Stimson.

“You’ve got a leader who is desperate to win football matches. You find out so much about people in football and at the club when you lose and what it means to people.

“Barry has got that hurt in him when we lose. He doesn’t like losing.

“He was going around the changing room before the game on Saturday and at half-time. It makes my job a lot easier; he’s my voice.”
