Stadhart leaves Wings flying high

LATE GOAL: Che Stadhart
LATE GOAL: Che Stadhart

Sutton United 1 Welling United 2

SUBSTITUTE Che Stadhart's 85th minute winner at Sutton United on Saturday sent Welling to the top of Conference South.

With leaders Histon having their game called off and Bishop's Stortford failing to win at Havant the Wings took full advantage against their mid-table opponents.

A bobbly pitch did nothing to help the standard of football played, although both sides missed good chances in the first half.

Steve Harper had gone close for the Wings early on, while Ross Gaynor missed Sutton's clearest opening.

The deadlock was broken just before half-time when Ellis Green sent Tony Battersby away down the right and he squared for Harper to score from close range.

Sutton put Welling under pressure at the start of the second half and former Gravesend defender John Scarborough saw his header come back off the bar.

Scarborough did find the net on 58 minutes, however, when he headed home a near post free-kick.

Battersby saw his header touched onto the bar by keeper Gary Hogan before Stadhart volleyed in at the far post to give Welling the three points.
