Smith under fire as Wings crash out

UNDER PRESSURE: Fans called for Neil Smith's resignation during the match

Wealdstone 1 Welling 0

WELLING manager Neil Smith's job was left hanging by a thread after his side were dumped out of the FA Trophy by Ryman League Premier Division strugglers Wealdstone on Saturday.

The Wings registered just one shot on target in the game and had the luxury of the home side missing a late penalty which would have added further agony.

It was former Welling striker Stephen Hughes who scored the decisive goal in the 31st minute. After Orlando Smith gifted the hosts possession, one long ball split the Welling defence apart and Hughes fired home from 20 yards.

The Wings had their clearest opportunity 10 minutes before the break but Omari Coleman's header was cleared away to safety via the post.

In the second half, Welling lacked any conviction and their play left the travelling support calling for Smith to resign.

Their only shot on target came nine minutes from time when Sam Keevill's left-foot shot was blocked by keeper Keita Karamoko.

With two minutes left, Jamie Turner escaped a red card when he felled Wealdstone forward Peter Dean but he redeemed himself by saving Dean's tame penalty.
