Smith looks set to join Swindon Town permanently

Gillingham v Swindon Town

GILLINGHAM’S former captain Paul Smith may face his old teammates sooner than expected after linking up with Swindon Town.

Smith joined Iffy Onuora’s side for training this week, and may claim a place on the bench for Saturday’s clash between the sides, providing he can prove his fitness.

Onuora explained that he’d been after Smith for some time and was keen to tie up a permanent deal soon.

The Swindon boss said: "In terms of bringing him to the club I think this is third time lucky now, as he’s someone we’ve been after for a while.

"I know him well and hopefully we can sort something out for him to join us."

Saturday’s game, however, may come too soon for Smith, who hasn’t played competitively since Gills’ embarrassing 5-0 defeat at Colchester at the end of November.

"I am mindful that he hasn’t played a lot of games recently so may need more match fitness," said Onuora.

"He will bring a bit more presence to the midfield and also competition for places in that area. Should we manage to sort out a deal, he will be one who will lead from the front and will lead by example."
