Sizzling Slater effort cheers Wings

Welling 1 Bognor 1

DANNY Slatter produced his best performance in a Welling shirt to earn Liam Daish’s side a point on Saturday.

Ironically, the former Chelsea midfielder, who was brought to the club by ex-boss Paul Parker, seems to have had a weight lifted off his shoulders since Parker’s departure.

He capped an inventive display by cancelling out Luke Nightingale’s early opener for the visitors, although Daish conceded that it was two points dropped for the Wings.

"We had the better chances in the second- half and overall I feel it is two points dropped," said Daish. "We made it hard for ourselves when we gave a sloppy goal away from a straight ball that we should have dealt with.

"But we got back into the game with a great goal by Danny Slatter, and it was a great performance by him as well."

Paul Booth and Jo Flack both went close for the Wings before static defending let David Piper’s 12th minute free-kick set up Nightingale for an easy opener for the visitors.

Welling levelled on 24 minutes when Slatter intercepted a pass 25 yards from goal and went through two challenges before rounding keeper Craig Stoner and firing high into the net.
