WELLING turned in one of their worst displays of the season as a deflected goal settled their trip to Carshalton on Tuesday.

The Wings appeared untroubled by the Nationwide Conference South strugglers in the early exchanges and dominated possession.

However, Carshalton took the lead on 19 minutes when Tony Quinton's long-range shot took a wicked deflection to beat the wrong-footed Jamie Turner in the Welling goal.

Che Stadhart, Welling's best attacking option, twice went close in an eight-minute period before half-time. He sent his first effort over the bar but then produced a stunning one-handed save from keeper Adam Federici with his second shot.

An error by Barry Ashby after 63 minutes let in Matt Fowler, but his shot was cleared off the line by the impressive John Guest.

Welling had plenty of possession and substituted two defenders as they pushed men forward in an attempt to gain a point.

But it was not until the 89th minute that they created a clear-cut opening, James Pinnock seeing his shot on the turn deflected wide of the upright.

Welling: Turner, Gledhill (Perkins 70), Solomon (D Moore 79), Ashby, Guest, Bodkin, Rowland, Kedwell, Owen, Stadhart, Day.
Subs Not Used: C Moore, Clarke.
