Royce: Gills need to do talking on the pitch

"It’s time we bucked our ideas up" – that was the verdict from Gillingham keeper Simon Royce after Saturday’s defeat at non-league Grays Athletic.

The club’s number one keeper was less than impressed with the loss against Blue Square Premier Grays and feels the Gills are under achieving where it matters.

He said: "Pre-season isn’t going 100 per cent according to plan and we’ve had some disappointing results against Stevenage and Grays.

"Faversham was different but obviously they’re not as high up as the other two. The way we’ve gone about those two games hasn’t been the same as we’ve gone about the rest of pre-season.

"We’ve got a double training session on Monday and we’ll have another chat about it but at the end of the day talk is cheap.

"You’ve got to do the talking on the pitch and at the moment we haven’t done that.

"You don’t want to come to Grays and lose 1-0, of course it gets to you. Whether it’s pre-season or a game on the training ground, I don’t like letting goals in – even if it’s the back garden!"
