Rochester golfer picked for Tokyo

Matt Haines has followed up his full England debut by being picked to represent his country again, this time in the World Junior Team Championship in Japan.

The 18-year-old, who plays out of Rochester & Cobham Golf Club, will form part of a four-man team for the major competition at Chukyo Golf Club in Tokyo next month.

Haines made his international debut in a 14-10 win over France at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire last weekend.

It was not a winning start for Haines, however, as he went down 5&3 to Mathieu Bey. Bey reached the turn in 32 and the Frenchman went on to secure winning birdies at the 13th and 15th holes.

Haines’ team-mates won the day in the biennial contest but he had clearly done enough to catch the selectors’ eye.
