Phil Parkinson: "We have a clear idea of the players we want"

Norwich v Charlton

Phil Parkinson, Charlton’s caretaker manager, has already drawn up a wish list of players he wants - should he be given the job on a permanent basis.

Parkinson, who goes to Norwich on Saturday in search of a first win in six attempts, has been given until January to convince Charlton’s board of directors that he is the man for the job.

He said: "We have a clear idea of the players we want and talks with those players are already ongoing. I know we’re at the wrong end of the table but Charlton is a big club and players want to come here because of that.

"I’m not prepared to say how many players I would like to sign but everyone knows we need to make changes. At the moment I’m concentrating on getting the best out of the players we have here already.

"Those who come in will help the exisiting squad. There will be players leaving because I believe that you can only be a squad player for so long.

"There comes a time when a player has to take stock and decide to move on."

Parkinson must decide whether to stick with Newington youngster Rob Elliot, who made his full first team debut in Monday’s 2-2 draw against Derby, or recall the more experienced Nicky Weaver, who was dropped for the first time to make way for him.

The match will be the last that central defender Linvoy Primus will be available as his loan deal with Portsmouth ends on Monday. However, it is likely that Parkinson will persevere with skipper Mark Hudson and Jonathan Fortune at the heart of the defence at Carrow Road.

Sixteen-year-old midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who scored a hat-trick for the reserves against Lewes in midweek, comes into contention.

Fellow midfielder Therry Racon is expected to be available early in January after returning to France for an injection in a troublesome knee injury.
