New faces at Priestfield imminent

STIMSON: "We need competition for places"

MARK STIMSON hopes to sign two more players for by the end of Tuesday including a striker – but it won't be Stuart Fleetwood.

The Gillingham manager is keen to add the Blue Square Premier's leading scorer to his ranks but for now he is looking elsewhere and is ready to bring in some more new faces.

Along with a striker will be a central defender, which Stimson badly needs as he has no cover in that department with both Ian Cox and Efe Sodje recovering from injury.

He said: "We need competition for places. We had youngsters on the bench on Saturday again in Luis Cumbers, who has done well, but we can't expect him to come on and set it alight.

"We need people to come in and help us get through the next few months and hopefully we'll have another centre forward to help us get through."

Rivals for Fleetwood's signature are queuing up, although last week Cheltenham gave up the chase and Stimson is remaining positive.

He said: "It's not Fleetwood at the moment but that could change.

"There's another one we're waiting for and we'll just wait and see, and hopefully we can tie that up on Monday or Tuesday."

Stimson is trying to sign Grays defender Jon Ashton but the non-league side were reluctant to sell while they remained in the FA Trophy.
