New Addicks hitman likely to start

FIRST START: Luke Varney
FIRST START: Luke Varney

Charlton v Norwich

CHARLTON look certain to hand Luke Varney his full debut in tonight's home game against Norwich City.

The 25-year-old striker, who cost the Addicks £2.5million from Crewe in May, looks likely to replace injured Bulgarian international Svetoslav Todorov who limped off with a pulled thigh muscle after 72 minutes in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Colchester.

Varney, who damaged ankle ligaments in a pre-season friendly against Chelsea, scored a hat-trick for the reserves last Monday and looked lively when he came on at Layer Road where his header set up Zheng Zhi's equaliser.

Manager Alan Pardew may overhaul his under-fire defence which could see the Charlton debut of former Margate central defender Sam Sodje.

He and Madjid Bougherra could form a new partnership at the heart of the defence at the expense of Patrick McCarthy and Jonathan Fortune.

"The match is the first of two successive home games in five days and offers us the opportunity to make ground on the leaders," said Pardew.

The match pits the Addicks boss against his former West Ham assistant Peter Grant. The match kicks off at 8pm.
