Midfielder can become a legend, says Addicks boss

LES REED insists midfielder Andy Reid is in perfect shape to help Charlton beat the drop.

The Republic of Ireland international is constantly subjected to hoots of derision from supporters away from The Valley.

But his new boss retorted with a vigorous defence of the club’s £3million summer buy from Tottenham.

Reid does not match the photo-fit of today’s Premier League professional. But his manager went as far as to liken his shape to that of legendary Hungarian Ferenc Puskas.

Reed said: "The late Ferenc Puskas was the same shape and size and he didn’t do too badly."

The Addicks boss went further and urged Reid to become a Charlton legend.

He added: "I’ve got great belief in Andy. Charlton have in the past had Scott Parker, Lee Bowyer and Mark Kinsella. Andy can fill those boots."
