Marsh claims British boxing title

Kent's Matthew Marsh beat Esham Pickering to win the British super-bantamweight title at Bethnal Green.

The Welling-based fighter's work-rate proved too much for the former European and Commonwealth champion.

Marsh came out firing from the opening bell and stamped his authority on the fight with a number of big right hand punches that disorientated the outgoing champion, who was hoping to clinch the Lonsdale belt outright.

The bout was fought at close range, with Marsh often first to the punch while Pickering's timing looked awry.

Pickering scored some success when landing to the body and Marsh was only marginally ahead as they entered the latter stages of the fight.

Pickering was then rocked by a combination in the 10th round and Marsh went on to win the fight, with the judges seeing it 117-111, 116-113, 115-113 in his favour.

On the undercard, Sidcup's David Walker suffered a narrow one-point defeat against Peterborough's JJ Bird.

Bird was awarded a 39-38 points win from referee Ian John-Lewis after a hard fought four-round battle.
