Margate victims of Norman conquest

Margate 1 Morecambe 2

MARGATE'S FA Umbro Trophy dream was destroyed in the space of four second-half minutes of their quarter-final tie against Morecambe at Hartsdown on Saturday.

The teams were still deadlocked at 0-0 when Morecambe boss Jim Harvey threw on John Norman as part of a double substitution on the hour.

Within quarter-of-an-hour the visiting sub had turned the tie on its head scoring first with a close-range volley and then with a delightful curling free-kick.

Paul Lamb's 85th minute piledriver set up a nail-biting climax, but it was too little, too late and the Gate fans in a crowd of 1,244 were left to reflect on what might have been.

The home side dominated the opening hour and squandererd several glorious chances, with top scorer Leon Braithwaite missing the best in the first 90 seconds.
