Cheltenham Town 1 Gillingham 0

GILLINGHAM lost their opening League 1 game of the season at Cheltenham on Saturday.

The only goal of the game came in the 24th minute when Steven Gillespie latched onto a Jeremy Gill pass and beat Gills keeper Simon Royce.

The task for the visitors became harder on 56 minutes when defender Ian Cox was shown a red card for holding back Paul Connor when through on goal.

It was then made almost impossible when new signing Steve Lomas was dismissed for a second bookable offence with 16 minutes to play, despite the sending off of Scunthorpe's Gillespie shortly afterwards.

Gillingham: Royce, Southall, Sodje, Cox, Armstrong, Bentley, Lomas, Crofts, Brown (King 62), Facey, Graham.
Subs: Stillie, King, Stone, Cogan, Mulligan.
Attendance: 4,008.
