Stuart Lewis is hoping his own-goal nightmare will be forgotten as he seeks a way into the FA Cup side to face Aston Villa at the weekend.

Lewis got the nod at right-back on Sunday as Barry Fuller was suspended but with 31 minutes gone he netted past his own keeper to give Wycombe the lead.

Lewis said: “When it came off my chest and it went in I was gutted.

“Of all the things that could have happened. Maybe I could have got out of the way but sometimes those things happen. You just have to try and keep your head up and working hard.”

Lewis, who was making only his second start of the season, failed to let the mistake affect his game and he was just disappointed that the side couldn’t take all three points.

He said: “I think it was going to take something unbelievable as we had ones cleared off the line and it didn’t fall for people. We did everything but score and they put men behind the ball and let us go at them and that showed what they thought of us.

“It looked like we were the only team going on to win it in the last 15 minutes and toward the end of games we’re always the team on the front foot.

“If we could get one early, with the way we are playing, we could go and win two, three or four nil.

“Footballing wise we played them off the pitch with our tempo and the way we kept the ball and the chances we had.

“With what I’ve seen so far, I don’t see why we can’t be promoted because we’re probably one of the best sides in the division.”

Lewis now has an eye on a starting place against Villa.

“You never know what’s around the corner,” he said. “Things can change overnight and that’s what it’s been like for me.

“It’s the biggest game of the season and hopefully I can get involved.

“That’s why you always need to be prepared because opportunities like that may come up.”
