Last month Charlie Lee was heading for the Gillingham exit door, but amid all of the transfer talk and rumour, the midfielder has kept his head down and started the season in blistering fashion.

The transfer-listed player spent the summer in talks with Southend and was left behind as the Gills went to France to prepare for life in League 1.

Fast forward a month and Lee has worked his way to the forefront of manager Martin Allen’s first team plans.

Lee said: “Things like that happen in football all of the time. Sometimes as a player it is what you want and sometimes it isn’t.

“I got on with it and I love playing here. Whatever happened in the off season, I was going to be ready for the first game and the gaffer has been brilliant with me.

“He showed faith in me, even if I didn’t play much in pre-season. He showed faith by putting me in for the first game and for the first time since I’ve been at Gillingham, I have started the season well."

Lee’s situation at the Gills is still far from certain but leaving has never been something he was relishing.

He added: “I am not thinking about moving at all, in any way. I am here for the season and until my contract runs out. After that, it is in the gaffer’s and chairman’s hands."
