Late strikes ensure Gate's cup triumph

Welling 0 Margate 2

TWO goals in the last 11 minutes by Che Stadhart and Peter Benevides assured Margate of progress in the Carthium Cup, and a second successive clean-sheet with a 2-0 win at Kent rivals Welling on Tuesday night. They now play Thurrock in the second round later this month.,

Less than 200 people were at Park View Road to see the tie - reviving the Conference League Cup - after an absence of several years. Stadhart broke the deadlock after 79 minutes, running onto John Keister's slide-rule pass and beat Wings goalkeeper James Pullen.

Then with time ticking away when Rocky Baptiste got away down the right and his shot went in off a Welling defender to make it 2-0 after 88 minutes.

Welling's best opportunity fell to George Lay who failed to convert Tommy Tyne's low cross. Margate's Aaron Barnett and Benevides both picked up yellow cards.

Former Gravesened midfielder Pat Gradley was back after injury, but apart from his return, manager Chris Kinnear named the same team that beat Weston Super Mare on Saturday.

Billy Edwards also returned to the squad following a recent hamstring injury, and will bolster Kinnear's selection options for Saturday's FA Trophy first round tie at Walton and Hersham.

Welling also travel to Surrey at the weekend, starting their Trophy campaign at Molesey.
