Kent to travel west for Trophy tie

KENT face a daunting cross-country trip to take on the mighty "Cornish Shrek" after drawing The Duchy of Cornwall in the third round of next year’s Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy.

The March 7 tie will be the first time in the 40-year history of the competition that the two sides have met.

Cornwall, who qualified for the third round with wins over Somerset Cricket Board and The Welsh Minor Counties side, were skippered in 2002 by Tom Sharp and include players with first-class experience.

This summer their seam attack was led by Charlie Shrek, a Nottinghamshire 2nd XI bowler, who claimed 41 wickets in the minor counties’ championship.

While former Warwickshire, Somerset and England Under-19 left-hander Piran Holloway occasionally supplemented Cornwall’s batting.

On the same day, Kent Cricket Board, the only Board XI to reach this stage of the competition every year since their inclusion in the draw, will entertain Derbyshire at St Lawrence.

Should David Fulton’s Kent side overcome Cornwall they will face the winners of the Buckinghamshire and Gloucestershire tie in Canterbury on May 28, while Kent CB could secure a trip to play the winners of the Durham Cricket Board against Glamorgan clash.
