Kent suffer the Birmingham blues

KENT put in another abject one-day performance and crashed out of the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy following a nine-wicket drubbing by Warwickshire.

Batting first in overcast conditions at Edgbaston, Kent played poor shots, ran badly and paid the ultimate price by posting a modest 50-over total of 211 all out.

Rob Key's run of rich form appeared set to continue as he raced to 45 with seven boundaries before confusion over a single with Matt Walker led to his run out.

The visitors suffered a mid-innings collapse of five wickets for 44 runs in 11 overs thereafter, leaving skipper David Fulton to lead a minor fight back with a competition-best 78.

Fulton was last man out two deliveries from the end of the innings having posted only his sixth half-century in 83 one-day games for the club.

Mohammad Sami sent back Neil Carter in the fifth over of Warwickshire's reply, but Nick Knight and Mark Wagh joined forces to win the game with an unbroken second wicket stand worth 183 in 39 overs.

Knight finished unbeaten on 74, but Wagh took the man-of-the-match honours with an excellent maiden one-day ton from 128 balls.

He reached three-figures and won the game with a hooked six of Alamgir Sheriyar to put Warwickshire into the fourth round draw with almost six overs to spare.
