Welling manager Andy Ford praised his side for a professional performance after they beat Whitstable to lift the Kent Senior Cup on Thursday night.

The Wings ran in six goals against a team two levels below them and Ford admitted that, with home advantage, his team were on a hiding to nothing.

“We set out to do a professional job and that’s what we did,” he said. “It was a no-win situation for us as we should have beaten them.

“We played some good football, scored some good goals and the greasy surface suited us.

“They battled well and caught us out a few times in the first half-hour which was an area of concern.”

Ford was always aware of the threat that Whitstable would pose but added: “I saw them against Bromley in the semi-final and they were always going to raise their game but we always had pace that could hurt them.”

Striker Loui Fazackerley impressed again for the Wings and Ford believes he has reacted well to being left out of his starting line-up.

“Loui came back on form again,” added Ford. “He has lost a bit of weight, he bulked himself up too much but he has come back hungry and leaving him out for a while has done him some good.”

As for the silverware – the fourth time Ford has won the Kent Senior Cup as a manager – the Wings boss knows that the biggest prize, a play-off place, just eluded his side.

“I would have preferred to get a play-off place but you never put a new team together and get to the play-offs in the first year,” he reflected.

“This is a building year and we want to try and keep 10 or 11 players together and build from there.

“We want three wins to finish off now, I want to get sixth spot if we can but other results need to go for us.”
