Kent send Surrey crashing to defeat

KENT wrapped up a confidence-boosting innings and 79 run win over Surrey at Whitgift School to make a big move up the LV Championship Division 1 table.

Kent wrapped up their 22-point win by 3pm after finally removing Surrey's limpit-like and hugely in-form batsman Mark Ramprakash who posted his fifth century of the summer to partially delay Kent's celebrations.

Under a baking sun, the visitors were made to toil hard for their first breakthrough of the day as experienced fourth wicket partners Ramprakash and Ali Brown set about posting 129 in 36 overs.

They saw off the opening bursts of Yasir Arafat, Andrew Hall and Ryan McLaren with both Brown, the dominant partner, overtaking his partner soon after reaching his 94-ball half-century.

Realising his seamers were no longer causing too many headaches, Kent skipper Rob Key turned to his off-spinner James Tredwell and within four overs the ploy worked.

With his score on 68, Brown was lured down the track by Tredwell's flight but beaten through the gate as he attempted to drive, the ball spinning back to peg back off stump.

Ian Salisbury, promoted to bat ahead of the injured Ricky Clarke, opened his shoulders to hit two mighty sixes off Tredwell as his opening two scoring shots, but he perished after cracking 16 at a run-a-ball when attempting to force the pace against McLaren. An expansive drive found an inside edge and the ball jagged back to uproot off and middle stumps and send Salisbury packing.

Clarke, hampered by a hamstring strain, swished across the line to McLaren's next ball up, which was quick, straight and full-length, to go leg before for a golden duck.

Surrey's first innings top-scorer Matt Nicholson again showed scoring intent in hitting 13 from 19 balls, but his slog sweep against Tredwell merely picked out McLaren on the ropes at deep-mid wicket to give Kent their fourth and final wicket of the opening session.

Key took the new ball soon after tea and again the decision came up trumps as McLaren, with only the fifth ball with the new cherry, seamed one away from right-hander Neil Saker to graze the outside edge and fly to first slip where Hall took a good catch to his right.

Ramprakash sailed to the 92nd first-class century of the season from 216 balls and with 13 fours and a six, but even he realised he was fast running out of partners.

Nayan Doshi (11) then snicked a slash drive against Simon Cook to be superbly caught one-handed and overhead at second slip by van Jaarsveld and, with the last man in, Ramprakash had little choice but to for his shots.

On 108 he tried to clear the ropes for a second time off Tredwell, but this time he holed out to 12th man Neil Dexter who was fielding for the injured Matt Walker.

It gave Tredwell respectable figures of three for 53 while McLaren bagged three for 86 to wrap up a maximum points win and their first on the road this season.
