Kedwell sends Wings through in replay

TWO GOALS: Danny Kedwell
TWO GOALS: Danny Kedwell

Basingstoke 0 Welling United 2

LEADING scorer Danny Kedwell took his tally to 17 goals for the season with a brace to see off Basingstoke in the FA Trophy on Tuesday night.

Kedwell scored a goal in either half to set up a second round trip to either Altrincham or Tamworth.

Without the injured Steve Harper (heel), Kedwell led the line by himself as Welling adopted a five-man midfield which successfully prevented the hosts from getting into their stride.

Delighted Welling boss Adrian Pennock said: "It was a fantastic performance and the players did everything that we asked.

"It was a better display than the league win at Basingstoke, we were the better team for 90 minutes and it was an accomplished and professional display."

Kedwell put Welling ahead on 19 minutes. Collecting the ball before his marker, Kedwell showed clever footwork and neat close control before unleashing a devastating right-foot shot beyond keeper Stuart Searle from the edge of the penalty area.

Welling's only concerns came when they gifted possession away on the edge of their own penalty area but Scott Cross twice failed to take advantage.

With the fog closing in, any doubts that the game would need extra-time were ended on the hour mark when Kedwell showed his predatory instincts to react while others stood and watch and fire Welling into a two-goal lead.

The striker should have completed his hat-trick 12 minutes from time but headed over Lawrie Wilson's deep right-wing cross.

Welling: Turner, Wilson, Solomon, Perkins, Moore, Boateng, Green, Kedwell, Stadhart, Carthy, Day.
Subs not used: Lewis, Hyde, Sam, Goodfellow.
