Brighton and Hove Albion 1 Gillingham 0

GILLINGHAM were beaten by a single goal at Brighton after failing to convert their chances.

Jake Robinson's 67th minute volley settled the match but Gillingham will feel hard done by after coming close on many occasions.

A lively match saw both teams play at a high tempo after the pair each recorded opening day wins.

Gillingham lined up with the same team that beat Huddersfield on Saturday but were unable to convert chances into goals. Manager Ronnie Jepson said afterwards that that was the most disappointing aspect of the 90 minutes.

The visitors' best opportunity came just after the break when Matt Jarvis saw his shot beaten away by keeper Wayne Henderson.

Moments later Dean McDonald hit a shot from just outside the area which dipped inches over the bar.

Gillingham continued to attack following Robinson's goal and five minutes from the end Gary Mulligan should have equalised after following in on Jarvis' powerful effort, only to fire a weak shot at the keeper.

Gills: Jack, Jupp, Jackman, Cox, Sancho, Crofts, Bentley, Crofts (Nsungu 81), Jarvis, Mulligan, McDonald. Subs Not Used: Easton, Johnson, Spiller, Pouton.
