Simeon Jackson believes that Gillingham must stay focused on themselves if they want to succeed next season.

Jackson, who scored four goals from 14 starts last season, isn’t bothered what anyone else in League 2 is doing – and believes that is the recipe for success.

“You have to concentrate on what you’re doing and not worry about other teams,” he said. “That’s how you will do well.

“We would like to go straight back up so we’re going to aim to do that, look to be in the top half and do well.”

The 21-year-old joined Gillingham at the end of January and, despite suffering the ignominy of relegation, he’s now looking forward to establishing himself at the club and helping them bounce back.

He said: “Football is special and you can’t really knock it. It has its ups and downs but you just have to stick with it.

“I feel settled in now, it’s a brilliant club and we’re just trying to take it in the right direction.

“It’s very good playing in the league. I had a taste of it before and now I’m back in it I’m trying to get my bearings and trying to do well.

“It’s been a brief summer break but we’re back in for the right reasons and the manager wants us to tick over in June. We’ll only see the benefits in the season.

“We’re all gelling together and we’ve got this pre-season now to gel and become a team for when the season starts.

“This division won’t be easier but the way the manager wants to play and with the players we’ve got I think we’ll do well.

“Everyone sets themselves personal targets but I like to keep them to myself. That’s the only way to go forward, to set yourself targets.

“I’ve got the taste of scoring for Gillingham now and I just want to keep that going.”
