WELLING produced a much-improved display on Saturday to pick up a point against in-form Lewes.

The Wings, who were playing their fourth game of the week, edge the Conference South contest and were unfortunate not to claim a second-half winner.

Neither side looked like scoring in the first half, although visiting keeper Steve Williams had to turn away an excellent Jamie Day free-kick.

Former Welling striker Paul Booth led the line for Lewes but he was well-marshalled by Steve Perkins and Chris Moore.

Welling boss Adrian Pennock gave debuts to Hector Mackie and Joe Bruce. He saw his side dominate the second half but fail to get the vital breakthrough.

Welling's best chances fell to Richard Carpenter but he shot wide from 20 yards after a Mackie break and then saw his volley well saved by Williams.

Lewes, who needed to win to have any chance of making the play-offs, showed little ambition and had their first shot at goal with just four minutes left. The fact that Welling keeper Jamie Turner never had a shot to save underlined how well the Wings defended.

The point keeps Welling in touch with the play-off contenders in Conference South ahead of second-placed Salisbury's trip to face the Wings at Dartford's Princes Park on Wednesday night.
