Ice men out to tame Buffalos

THE Medway-based Invicta Dynamos ice hockey squad will look to strengthen their English National Hockey League (South) promotion claims when they take on Basingstoke Buffalos this weekend.

The clash takes place at the Ice Bowl at Gillingham on Sunday. The face-off is at 5.15pm.

Last weekend Invicta put up a creditable showing against their old foes Isle of Wight before they went down 4-1 in the EHL Premier Cup.

The National Premier League side may have taken the victory but the Dynamos matched them for the first half before falling away.

The chances of an upset were slim with Garrett Bruce and Kevin Parrish among six players missing.

Both sides had the same number of shots on goal, 14, in a scoreless first-half with Invicta’s Peter Carey picking up a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

But the Raiders took only 36 seconds of the second period to take the lead through Rob Lamey but Invicta were level on 35.17.

Peter Beerling restored parity with an unassisted powerplay but Raiders were back in front five minutes later when Dynamos conceded a soft short-handed goal from Andy Pickles. Third period strikes from Chris Crombie (45.50) and Lamey (54.56) killed the game off.
