Ice men edge close to league title

AFTER the thrills and spills of last weekend, the Medway-based Invicta Dynamos ice hockey squad know a win against Basingstoke Buffalo on Sunday will put them within one victory of the English National Hockey League title.

If they get the two points at Basingstoke, then the February 1 game at home to Peterborough could end in celebration.

Player-coach Phil Chard said: “It’s going to be tough. We were three down in the first five minutes in the first game and they were without their top goalscorer. We managed to claw it back and got two late goals to win 7-5, but it was close.

“After our performance on Sunday I won’t have to get the team up. They’re ready for it and looking good.”

The Mos did exactly what they set out to do last weekend. They thrashed Peterborough Islanders in the League Cup and put in a proud performance against Swindon Lynx in the Premier Cup.

With goal difference in mind, the Mos did a thorough job on Peterborough, winning 14-3, and on Sunday higher league opposition Swindon were held 4-4 thanks to goals from Kev Lake (2), Gary Dodds and Peter Carey.
