Huge relief to be out of drop zone

AT LAST! After five long months we are finally out of the bottom three after another impressive performance against high-flying Ipswich.

Of course, with seven games to go, we are still far from safe, but it's a relief to be out of the drop zone, and a good reward for the efforts of the players in the last three months or so.

They will have gone into their two-week break on a real high after outplaying the Tractor Boys - although their joy may have been tinged with a slight disappointment that we only took one point instead of all three.

And if it wasn't for the ever-impressive Kelvin Davis and the crossbar in front of the Rainham End, we could have sealed a precious win.

Perhaps even better than the result and eventual escape from the bottom three is that I think we can play even better than that.

And, despite Ipswich assistant boss Willie Donachie's comments that we would have won if we had a natural goalscorer, I don't think there was a lot more that the hard-working front pair of Mama and Darius could do - although if the latter must dive in the penalty area, he could at least make it look better than his first half effort.

Priestfield was really rocking and it's been good to see Ipswich fans on the Internet congratulating us on the atmosphere, even if it was soured for some by heavy-handed stewarding which saw one of the club's most dedicated fans ejected.

I know the lad in question (he's an old school pal) and he is one of the most inoffensive people I have ever met, and I was stunned when I heard that the skirmish in the Rainham End had involved him.

He wasn't arrested, and one of the stewards involved has been sacked, so hopefully there will be no long-term consequences and I'm sure that he'll be leading the Gills travelling army once again at Preston on April 2.

That is, of course, our next fixture with a frustrating Easter ahead of us, with World Cup qualifiers meaning we are without the traditional pair of matches. Still, at least it gives Stan Ternent more time to prepare for the climax to the season.
