DARREN Byfield will be Gillingham’s new penalty taker after John Hills twice missed from the spot against Burnley.

Hessenthaler said: “John had a great record, but unfortunately that was before he came here. When Nicky Southall missed twice he was replaced so I’m not being harsh, just giving him a break. I’ll continue to change it around if spot kicks are missed, I’ll take them myself if needs be.”

Meanwhile, Torquay are refusing to budge in their dispute with Gillingham over the three-month loan of keeper Bertrand Bossu. He was sent back to Priestfield after just two games with the Gulls claiming he was carrying a previously sustained knee injury.

Technically he’s still registered with Torquay and Gills are holding out for the money due to them for the player’s wages, but United chairman Mike Bateson is refusing to pay and is awaiting a response from Gillingham.
