Hess signs Nowland in bid to halt slide

GILLINGHAM have brought in West Ham’s Adam Nowland on loan to solve their creative midfield problems.

September was a dismal month for Andy Hessenthaler’s side who were without a win, picking up just one point from a possible 15.

Nowland will be thrown straight into action on Saturday away at Plymouth as Hessenthaler tries to halt the losing streak.

He said: “He will start as Nicky Southall is suspended. I’m also thinking of bringing myself back into the squad. Adam’s a player I’ve admired since he played for Wimbledon but he went to Upton Park.

“Fortunately we have finally managed to bring him here. He can play right across the middle of the park and I’m pleased we've brought in a new face and more importantly fresh, young legs in midfield.”

The deal is initially for a month for the 23-year-old Lancashire-born player who began his career at Blackpool. He will link up with former team-mates Patrick Agyemang from his Wimbledon days and John Hills, who he played with at his first club.

Hess added: “It always helps if a player knows people at his new club as it allows them to settle quicker.

"I'm not sure if his arrival will boost his former team-mates. Maybe, but Agyemang knows what I think at the moment. Sometimes he does not give us enough. He needs to be more consistent but then again so does the rest of the team.”

Plymouth, 15th in the table, five places above Gills, ended their own disappointing run of four successive defeats with a 1-1 draw away at Preston North End on Tuesday night.

The same night, Leicester left Priestfield with a 2-0 victory but Hessenthaler saw some positives in the display.

He said: “I thought we did really well in the first-half, unfortunately we did not carry on passing the ball in the second and we conceded because we weren’t marking properly.

"I brought in young players like Matty Jarvis, Andrew Crofts and put Darius Henderson up front with Darren Byfield and they caused problems, although the service to them was not good enough after the break.

“Plymouth will be another tough game. Despite their poor recent form, they are still a strong side at home but we need a result.”

New signing Nowlands spoke to KM-fm after his first training session and said he is looking forward to his new challenge...
