Gills working hard to bring striker to Priestfield

Gillingham's management will be working right to the wire to bolster their squad ahead of the transfer window closing tonight.

A striker remains top of the hit-list and manager Mark Stimson held talks with chairman Paul Scally after Saturday’s win over Accrington in a bid to get extra funds to make a move.

With the transfer budget already stretched to the limit, Stimson will also be hoping he can move some players on to free up much-needed funds.

Among the names circulated for a loan move is Stuart Lewis but as yet nothing has materialised.

Gills assistant manager Scott Barrett knows new additions would be welcome – but not essential.

“The chairman has backed us so far and hopefully if we can get an extra body in then fantastic but if not then we’ll go with what we’ve got,” he said.

“If the chairman has found a few quid down the back of his sofa then we may be able to get someone without Stuart Lewis going, but if he did go out on loan somewhere, then it does free up a few pounds.

“The manager’s phone will be red hot as it is every time there’s a deadline, and it goes right down to the wire.”

Gillingham have been in talks with a mystery League 1 striker for several weeks but time is running out.
