Gillingham 3 - 2 Portsmouth

AN EXTRA time winner from Andrew Crofts saw Gillingham beat Premiership side Portsmouth in a thrilling cup tie.

The Wales under-21 international controlled a Danny Jackman cross in the 94th minute and fired past Pompey keeper Jamie Ashdown to make it 3-2 and send Gills into the third round of the Carling Cup.

Earlier, Gills had twice battled from a goal to make it 2-2.

Gary O'Neil had fired Portsmouth into the lead in the 25th minute when he turned a Dario Silva cross past Jason Brown.

Darren Byfield put the hosts back on level terms when he took advantage of a defensive mix-up to equalise on 41 minutes.

A dubious penalty award allowed Matthew Taylor to put Pompey back in front three minutes after the restart but Byfield created a second equaliser in the 55th minute when his shot hit the post and went into the net off Ashdown's back.

There was still time for Pompey substitute Svetoslav Todorov to miss an 85th minute penalty, before Crofts goal won it for Gills in extra time.

Gillingham: Brown, Sancho, Hope (Jackman 77), Johnson, Rose, Hessenthaler (Williams 65), Flynn, Crofts, Jarvis, Byfield, Shields (Hislop 112).
Subs Not Used: Crichton, Pouton.
Attendance: 4,903.
