WHILE the youngsters took the plaudits for Gillingham’s midweek demolition of Dagenham, an older head was reaping his own quiet satisfaction.

Goalkeeper Derek Stillie, understudy to Simon Royce, kept his first clean sheet for the club since arriving from Dundee United in the summer and now he is eyeing Royce’s shirt.

The 33-year-old said: "It was good to keep my first clean sheet for the club, as a goalkeeper it is what you always strive for.

"Even when we were 4-0 up I kept on at the boys because it was important not to concede.

"I am trying to put as much pressure on Simon as possible.

"He has been putting in some fantastic performances but when my chance comes, hopefully I will be able to stake a claim for the spot because, like everyone, I want to help Gills get up the table.

"But nobody can have any complaints about what Simon is doing at the moment."
