Gills in urgent need of goal scorer

DARREN BYFIELD: Plenty of talent but Jon Phipps has questioned his attitude
DARREN BYFIELD: Plenty of talent but Jon Phipps has questioned his attitude

I WOULD love for us to be in a situation where we could write off Saturday's defeat at Watford as "one of those days".

However, we are not in the league position for it to be anything other than downright frustrating.

After a terrible first half, we absolutely murdered the Hornets in the second half, with Paul Smith and Darius Henderson rattling the bar and many other chances passing us by, before Chris Eagles killed us off in the last minute.

New boy Mike Flynn showed some promise in midfield, but we must now concentrate our efforts on getting someone to score.

Darren Byfield clearly has the talent, but some of his recent performances have raised questions marks over his attitude and desire, while Darius Henderson doesn't lack the effort, but doesn't get into the goalscoring positions often enough for anyone's liking.

We’ve had a £150,000 bid for Peterborough's Calum Willock turned down this week, which at least shows that we are trying to rectify the problem, even if a man who has scored 10 times in League 1 this season may not prove to be a solution.

And with Chris Hope ruled out for a month, we might also need to dip into the transfer market at the back, and hopefully before the first of the 15 cup finals we have against our rivals from the Den at Priestfield on Saturday.

All the while our away form continues to be as bad as it is, it is vital that we win our home games, and with a big crowd expected on Saturday, Stan will be desperate for the lads to make it five wins out of six at Priestfield.

Finally, congratulations to Andrew Crofts on making his Wales Under-21 debut on Tuesday night.

I had doubts about Crofty, but he has proved me wrong with some fine performances. He will hope it is the start of a long international career.
