Brentford 1 - 1 Gillingham

AN EQUALISER 15 minutes from time denied Gillingham all three points against Brentford at Griffin Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

The home side scored against the run of play when Ryan Peters was left unmarked to knock the ball in at the far post after it had broken to Jay Tabb to cross from the right.

Gillingham had deservedly taken the lead on the stroke of half-time through new on loan striker Neil Harris.

Harris scored his 100th goal in league football after the ball had broken nicely for him.

It was no more than Neale Cooper’s side deserved after dominating the home side for the opening 45 minutes.

The visitors also had a strong shout for a penalty turned down five minutes before the break after Harris’s shot appeared to be handled on the goalline, but the referee only gave a throw in.

And Darren Byfield had two excellent chances, the first after 34 minutes when he was let in by poor defending and the second just before Harris’s goal, but both times he shot wide.

It weas a different story after the equaliser though, as Brentford began to dictate the play.

Ian Cox made a fantastic challenge to deny Dudley Campbell when he was shaping to shoot.

And Lloyd Owusu sent a fine header just over the crossbar after he had managed to escape the attentions of Cox from a corner.
