Gills could face battle to keep Barcham

Andy Barcham may attract interest from other clubs

Gills boss Mark Stimson has admitted it could be hard to keep hold of on-loan striker Andy Barcham.

Barcham is on loan from Premier League Tottenham but the deal expires on Boxing Day.

Stimson is hoping to extend that deal to the end of the season when the transfer window opens but admitted five-goal Barcham’s form could alert other teams to his availability.

Stimson said: “I’m sure there are other clubs looking at him and thinking could he go to them and improve their squad. Fingers crossed he won’t, but only time will tell.

“If he keeps producing like he did on Saturday and over the last couple of weeks, I’d be amazed if a club above us didn’t come in for him.

“All we can do is say to him enjoy your football, go and play and enjoy yourself. Feel free to run all over the pitch because you’ve got that much ability, we just want you on the ball. I think he likes that and has expressed himself in the right areas on the pitch.

“He had a loan spell at Leyton Orient last year. I think he played 25 games and got one goal, so we might be doing something different to what he was asked last year. The more he keeps scoring the more he’ll keep smiling, but hopefully no-one else will step in.”
