Gills benefit from Darlington penalty

Gillingham have moved up a place to eighth in League 2 following a 10 point deduction for promotion rivals Darlington.

The North East club were hit by the Football League penalty after announcing that they were going into administration after running into financial difficulties.

Darlington have now dropped out of the play-off positions from sixth to 11th. They are now nine points behind the Gills but have two games in hand.

They are the fourth League 2 side this season to be hit by a point deduction after Saturday’s visitors Bournemouth and Rotherham were handed 17 point deductions and Luton were imposed a record 30 point penalty.
