HESSENTHALER: made more than 350 appearances for Gills

SEVERAL former Gillingham stars have already agreed to take part in Andy Hessenthaler’s testimonial match.

Iffy Onuora, Mark Patterson and Nicky Southall will pull on the Gills shirt once more, with a host of other popular players also being asked to play.

Names such as Bob Taylor, Guy Butters and Andy Thomson may feature in the match which will celebrate Hessenthaler’s commitment to the club.

The date of the match and the opponents have yet to be confirmed, with Hessenthaler’s agent Andy Mills sounding out numerous Premiership clubs for a possible fixture at the end of the season.

Gary Nelson, part of the organising committee said: “We’re still working on the nitty gritty and a lot depends on who is free and available. At present several of the play-off winning team have put their names forward to take part in the match.”

Already arranged is a Sportsman’s dinner at Priestfield on March 25, following the home match against Swansea and a Golf Day on April 5.

Hessenthaler, 40, joined the Gills in August 1996 from Watford for £235,000 and four years later was appointed player-manager.

He led the club to their highest-ever league position of 11th in the then Division 1 in 2003. He quit as manager last year but continued as a player and has clocked up more than 350 appearance for the club.
