ANDY HESSENTHALER: "The chairman is happy with what I'm doing..."

GILLINGHAM manager Andy Hessenthaler has responded swiftly to the first whisperings of discontent by supporters who have hinted he should step down.

Upset about the club’s poor run of results, which has seen them pick up just 16 points from a possible 54, disgruntled fans have started to question if it isn’t time for a change at the helm.

Hessenthaler admitted he was shocked by the suggestions. He told the club’s official website: “It’s a bit disappointing when you hear things like supporters want to change the manager. The chairman is happy with what I'm doing. He knows where we’ve come from and we’ve just got to keep working hard.”

Chairman Paul Scally said: “If I get to a stage where I have to contemplate sacking Andy because of pressure, then it’s time for me to hang up my boots.

“I think he's the best thing our football club has got in so far as commitment and loyalty. He’s a good coach and he knows his players. Andy epitomises all that’s right about a football manager.”
