The highlight of Saturday came unexpectedly for Gills boss Martin Allen.

He and a fan shared a “special moment” during the half-time break.

The Gills were looking to bounce back after letting slip a 2-0 lead against 10 men.

Allen said: “I just keep my head down and walk along the touchline at half-time. If people cheer me or the geezer who keeps calling me a muppet says anything, I just walk down the touchline to my little space.

“At half-time, nobody knew what was going to happen. It was always going to be a testing second half.

“Some old boy came over, he leaned over and said ‘well done Martin, keep going, we’re proud of you and the team!’

“This time I didn’t ignore it and I walked back and found him and (we hugged). That was special – that was the highlight of my day because that was special.”
