FA Cup fourth round qualifying preview

STRIKER Onome Sodje has been cleared to play for Gravesend and Northfleet in Saturday’s FA Cup, fourth qualifying round tie at Kettering.

His club Charlton have agreed to the 17-year-old becoming cup-tied following a request frin Fleet manager Liam Daish.

Daish is hoping to pair him up front with top-scorer Charlie MacDonald at Rockingham Road. MacDonald was withdrawn from the squad at Tamworth after a recurrence of an ankle problem.

The Fleet go to Kettering knowing they could be cast in a supporting role on the day former England, Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder Paul Gascoigne is expected to make his debut for the Poppies, providing he purchases the club in time.

Daish said: "I don’t want us caught up in some media circus. The last thing I want is for my players to be talking about Paul Gascoigne. After our defeat at Tamworth I want them fully focused on the job at hand."

Injury-hit Welling travel to Dorchester with an under-strength side for their tie on Saturday.

Forward James Pinnock and keyman Steve Perkins both picked up injuries during the midweek Conference South win over Carshalton and are ruled out. Pinnock faces more than a month on the sidelines with an ankle injury while Perkins is due to have a scan on his knee.

With Rob Owen, Matt Carruthers and Daniel Moore still sidelined, Wings boss Adrian Pennock admitted that his squad will be fully-stretched.

"We'll be down to the bare bones, that's for sure," said Pennock. "It's a right sickener for us but we've got enough bodies in the squad and we'll go to Dorchester and give it our best shot."

Pennock believes Welling's travelling support also has a role to play and has urged the fans to get behind his team.

He said: "I know they've already filled one coach up and many more are travelling down so we need them to get right behind the team. The away support has been brilliant since I've been at Welling and we need them again at Dorchester."

Folkestone Invicta play one of the biggest games in the club's 69-year history when they travel to meet Aylesbury United on Saturday, just one win away from the first round proper when clus such as Nottingham Forest, Gillingham and Bristol City join the competition.

Invicta have so far equalled the club's best-ever run in the competition and Aylesbury are currently in the lower half of the Southern League Premier Division, an equivalent to Folkestone's Ryman League Premier Division.

Neil Cugley’s side still have painful memories of a 5-1 defeat away to Welling United in a fourth qualifying round replay in 2001 and will be looking to go one better this time around. The last time Invicta reached the first round was 1982.

Captain Scott Lindsey is suspended for Saturday's big tie. Martin Chandler is one possible replacement as he continues his comeback trail after a lengthy injury absence, while Kevin Watson is another if he is fit after missing the last nine matches.

Striker Joe Neilson is another more unlikely starter if Invicta choose to go for broke with a third attacker.

Bromley manager George Wakeling insists his team have nothing to fear ahead of their home tie against Nationwide Conference side Aldershot on Saturday.

Wakeling said: "I’ve got no fears and if our attitude is good then I don’t fear anything. It’s going to be a difficult game. The only worry would be about their higher fitness levels, purely because we’re part-time and they’re full-time."

Wakeling wants a large home support and hopes his players will rise to the challenge.

Cray Wanderers manager Ian Jenkins insists his players will not be overawed by Conference leaders Grays when the two go head-to-head at the Essex club’s Bridge Road ground.

The tie has been described as the worst Cray could have pulled out of the hat but upbeat Jenkins sees it differently.

He explained: "We were written off last season when we played AFC Wimbledon. They had gone 78 undefeated until we beat them. I shall remind the players of that.

"As I said before, we are a better side away from home which we’ve proved time and again."

Jenkins has a fully-fit squad and could spring a surprise by recalling long-term injury casualty Jamie Kempster to the midfield.

Meanwhile, Steffan Ball is aiming to continue his goal-a-game scoring sequence in the FA Cup when Ramsgate take on Southern League Premier Division Cirencester Town on Saturday.

Ball said: "It’s a massive game for the club and I can’t wait. It’s certainly the biggest match I have been involved in as a player. In fact I have had a good feeling we might do well since before our first game at Merstham."

Simon Pettit (hamstring) has joined Dean Hill on the sidelines and misses the game. Ed and Stuart Vahid return.

If Ramsgate win it will be their first appearance in the first round proper since the mid 1950s.
