Ealham and Khan return to the fray

MARK EALHAM: back in the squad

STRIKE bowler Amjad Khan and former England all-rounder Mark Ealham will hope for their first pre-season appearances for Kent today as the county take on Surrey in the third of their one-day warm-up games.

David Fulton’s side returned from Hove on Friday evening with an unbeaten record having tied and won their opening two friendlies against Sussex, a run the skipper would like to extend at St Lawrence today.

Khan (ankle) and Ealham (back spasm) missed the trip to the south coast, but will be included in the squad for the visit of the reigning Frizzell County Champions.

"I’m a bloke who likes to think my glass is half full, so taking the two matches into account I was quite pleased with the way things went against Sussex," said Fulton after Friday’s tied game.

"We had the worst of the conditions batting first on Friday, but we stuck to our task and almost nicked it in the end by showing the kind of presence on the field that I’m looking to instil.

"We have a good spirit about us and the guys here at Kent shouldn’t need motivating now.

"The new arrivals are looking to make a mark or get into the side, while at the other end of the scale we have a few pushing for England honours, so the mix is fresh and good."

In their opening match in Hove, Kent successfully chased 218 for victory with contributions from newboys Alamgir Sheriyar and Peter Trego to the fore.

Each took three wickets, but it was one of Kent’s unsung heroes, Ben Trott who caught Fulton’s eye.

Injured and out of sorts for much of last season, Trott performed with his old vim and vigour to claim four wickets against their near neighbours.

"Sheriyar showed good skills and Trego is the sort of player who can make things happen in a game, but I felt Trott was the pick over the two days," added Fulton.

"We needed wickets in that second match and ‘Trotty’ bowled with controlled hostility and his figures of three for 29 didn’t flatter him."

Fulton will draft in Khan, Ealham and Rob Key for today’s match in place of Matt Walker, Min Patel and James Hewitt who picked up injuries against Sussex.

The county continue their curtain raisers with a two-day game against Gloucestershire starting at St Lawrence on Thursday. Admission is free.
