Gillingham assistant boss John Schofield has hinted Cody McDonald could be on his way back to Priestfield.

Gills have been linked with the Coventry striker all summer.

And asked on Wednesday morning about the possibility of McDonald returning, Schofield said: "I probably shouldn't say this but the gaffer (Martin Allen) has done a rough copy of the squad list and he's left No.10 spare, so he's probably got something up his sleeve.

"Who that is and when that is, who knows? But there's certainly squad numbers available. That's as much as I can tell you because that's as much as I know."

McDonald scored 25 goals in 41 appearances on loan from Norwich in the 2010/11 season.

He rejoined the club on loan from Coventry last season, bagging four goals in seven matches before being recalled to the Ricoh Arena.
