Defender enters Addicks record books

RECORD BREAKER: Luke Young
RECORD BREAKER: Luke Young

LUKE Young became Charlton's most capped England player when he made his sixth international appearance against Poland at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The 26-year-old, who has drawn praise for his capable performances in place of the injured Manchester United full-back Gary Neville, broke Chris Powell's previous record of five caps.

Young played his part in England's 2-1 victory in an impressive performance that meant Sven-Goran Eriksson's side topped their World Cup qualifying group.

Stand-in skipper Michael Owen gave England the lead in the 44th minute, only for Tomasz Frankowski to equalise against the run of play almost immediately.

But England deservedly took the points when a superb break from their own penalty area finished with Frank Lampard hitting a stunning volley past the helpless Polish keeper Artur Boruc with 10 minutes to go.

England now have five friendly matches to play before the big kick-off in Germany next summer.
