Defeat spells the end for Gate

Havant & Waterlooville 3 Margate 1

A 3-1 defeat at Havant & Waterlooville condemned Margate to their second successive relegation on Saturday.

Both sides had chances in the first half. First, Adrian Clarke's corner was headed over the bar by Aaron Barnett, before Brett Poate saw Alexis Charalambous clear his goalbound effort off the line after he had wrong-footed Gate keeper Peter Trego.

The home side took the lead with 19 minutes to go. Former Premiership striker Dean Holdsworth took the ball down brilliantly before coolly slotting home.

Earlier, a great run and pass by Rocky Baptiste went unrewarded as Che Stadhart just failed to get on the end of it.

Gate were level after 76 minutes though. Substitute Darren Watson picked the ball up and played in Stadhart who slid the ball into the net to give the visitors, who needed to win to retain any chance of staying in the Nationwide Conference South, hope.

But a Holdsworth penalty five minutes later restored the home team's advantage and David Town wrapped up the points with a third late on.
