KIRK SHEPHERD is preparing for the biggest challenge of his fledgling darts career after qualifying for the Ladbrokes.com World Championships.

The 21-year-old semi-professional from Ramsgate will make his debut at London's Alexandra Palace after coming through the PDPA qualifiers in Wolverhampton.

Shepherd beat Irish veteran John MaGowan 5-4 in his final with his success elevating him to number 78 in the PDC world rankings - his highest positon to date.

The former World Youth Masters champion now faces world number four Terry Jenkins on Wednesday, December 19, in a first round match that will be televised by Sky Sports and is already guaranteed a £4,000 pay day.

Shepherd is unbeaten for Herne Bay in the Kent Super League this season.
