Cricket memorabilia to go under the hammer

A COLLECTION of cricketing memorabilia that once belonged to former Kent batsman Ted 'Punter' Humphreys will be sold at auction in the East Midlands next month.

One of Kent’s most celebrated cricketers, Humphreys played 366 games for the county through to his retirement in 1920.

He went on to become coach at Kent’s famous Tonbridge Nursery and then cricket master at Uppingham School in Leicestershire.

Though regarded as one of the most dependable batsmen on the county circuit, he scored 15,308 runs including 19 centuries, Humphreys never played for England. He died in Maidstone in 1949, aged 68.

His collection of ephemera, including photographs, scorecards, a clock and a pair of gold cufflinks, presented to him by the county, will be auctioned by Vennett-Smith Auctioneers at Colwick Racecourse in Nottingham from March 13.
