Controversial penalty helps Wings through

Welling United 3 Folkestone Invicta 1

STRIKER Danny Kedwell took his tally into double figures with a brace in Welling's FA Cup second qualifying round replay win over Folkestone on Tuesday.

Kedwell scored twice in the second half, including a controversial penalty, after the Wings had trailed at the break to an excellent Steve Norman free-kick.

As with Saturday's first game at Cheriton Road, the game was keenly contested and Folkestone more than held their own in the midfield battles.

Welling had the clearer chances with Kedwell and Che Stadhart both going close and a penalty appeal was turned down by referee Robert Whitton.

Folkestone went ahead in first-half stoppage time when Ben Lewis was penalised on the edge of the penalty area and Norman bent his free-kick round the wall and beyond Jamie Turner.

Welling were on level terms five minutes after the break, Ellis Green delivering a perfect cross for Kedwell to loop a header past Tony Kessell.

As many fans feared, the tie was eventually decided by a controversial decision by referee Whitton. Having lacked any control over the two games and baffled both teams with many of his decisions, the official awarded Wings a penalty after Samuel Okikiolu handled John Guest's long ball forward.

Kedwell sent Kessell the wrong way with the 76th minute spot-kick and Stadhart sealed Welling's path to a third qualifying round trip to AFC Hornchurch by turning in Ronayne Benjamin's cross in stoppage time.
