Charlton's slide toward League 1 accelerated with defeat in Saturday's clash against fellow Coca-Cola League Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest.

First-half goals from Nathan Tyson and Robert Earnshaw left the Addicks with just six points from a possible 51 since their last League success against Ipswich on October 4.

With new manager Phil Parkinson still awaiting a first win after nine games in charge, nothing short of a miracle will prevent the Addicks' relegation after two seasons in the Championship.

Afterwards, Parkinson insisted that it was not too late to avoid the drop.

He said:"Teams who have been in worse positions than us have escaped and I'm confident we'll get out of trouble.

"I'm working on bringing in more players next week who will add resilience to the side. Hopefully, I can bring in a striker.

"Nobody is giving up because if we win one I'm confident we'll piece together a winning run.

"But today we've suffered yet another kick in the teeth but we'll keeping fighting."

Charlton's ground staff, who worked tirelessly in getting the pitch playable, looked to have had their efforts rewarded as Charlton started brightly with Deon Burton and the outstanding Jonjo Shelvey going close in the opening three minutes.

Forest, fresh from beating Manchester City in the FA Cup a week earlier, were under constant pressure. But once Tyson gave them a 34th-minute lead, against the run of play, Charlton looked beaten.

Substitute Matt Holland's weak back pass let in Earnshaw for Forest's second two minutes later.

Charlton's poor form has now seen them go 18 without a win and, with Southampton picking up a win at Barnsley, the club sits five points adrift at the foot of the table, seven points from safety.

Charlton included midfielder Matthew Spring for his debut after he cut short his loan with Sheffield United from Luton and signed a permanent deal with the Addicks.

Addicks: Elliot, Murty, Fortune, Hudson, McEveley, Sam, Semedo (Holland 11), Shelvey, Spring (Waghorn 64), Ambrose, Burton (Gray 64). Subs not used: Randolph, Basey.

Attendance: 24,553.
